A tag is a keyword that is assigned to a piece of information (e.g. picture, article). It is also usually a keyword that is chosen by the author/creator of an item according to her/his personal preference, instead of by a pre-defined classification scheme.

The website del.icio.us (pronounced as "delicious") is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. Basically, it allows users to share their bookmarks with other Internet users or with members of their communities, using common "tags" (del.icio.us defines a "tag" as a simple word used to describe a bookmark).

For example, you use the tag "feminism" to bookmark websites that are related to the topic. By doing so, you are contributing to the pool of websites that have been tagged with "feminism". Tags which are used by many users are included in del.icio.us' hotlist - or most popular tags / topics. The hotlist changes depending on what tags are being used by members of the del.icio.us community at any given time. It's a great way to know which topics are of concern to most internet users. It's also a great way to disrupt the power to change priorities currently held by search engines such as Google

To set up your own del.icio.us account: go to http://del.icio.us. It's fairly easy.

 

1. Go to del.icio.us and log in to your account.
2. Click on "Post", you will be requested for a URL of the website you want to bookmark. For this campaign, put in: http://www.takebackthetech.net
3. Once you've entered the URL, you can then add descriptions and tags to the website. Click save and the website becomes part of your bookmark list. For this campaign, you can use the following tags (please note that tags are space-separated, meaning that if there is a space between tags, del.icio.us considers them to be separate tags):

• takebackthetech
• womenandicts
• feminism
• activism
• vawandicts

(You can definitely add your own tags, but please use the takebackthetech tag!)

If you're a Mozilla Firefox user, there is a del.icio.us plug-in that allows you simply click on a button when viewing a website to add them to your del.icio.us bookmarks.

If more del.icio.us users use the takebackthetech tag, it will put this tag in the hotlist - and generate interest in the campaign. So more people can Take Back The Tech!

Technorati is a search engine for blogs. Given the number and variety of blogs currently running on the WWW, having a search engine specifically for blogs is a pretty useful thing!

There are many things that a blogger or blogger-fan can do with a Technorati account.

• Search blogs
• Maintain a "Watchlist" - topics / keywords / tags that you want to keep an eye on. Keeping a Watchlist ensures that everytime someone blogs on a particular topic / keyword / tag, you will get an update when you log into Technorati.
• Claim a Blog. If you're a blogger, you can link your blog(s) to your Technorati account. Technorati will then track how many other blogs are linking your blog, and specify a ranking for your blog based on this.
• Find out the hottest topics on the blogosphere. Technorati maintains a listing of the most popular tags used by bloggers.
